Since the beginning we’ve had the option to include a custom mascot image in the UI, this has been marked as “legacy” for a few versions now.
We can have custom banners, but they’re not visible when logged in and using the instance.
I know we have the option of a custom favicon, but I worry that the new design will make individual identity of instances less clear.
This will probably have a negative impact on the community feel of a specific instance (which matters for smaller instances like mastodon.radio) and could cause confusion for people who have accounts on multiple servers (if they all look the same they’re hard to quickly know which one I’m using right now)
I’d like to know why the custom mascot is “legacy”, how long it’s got left, and request that there is a place for instance identity throughout the UI.
